Spring Cleaning: Refrigerator Edition

01 April, 2016

When you’re completing your daily or weekly chores, it may not occur to you that your refrigerator could use some love. If you’ve caught the spring cleaning fever, pay a little extra attention to your fridge inside and out with these tips!

Inside

Experts say home kitchens are breeding grounds for foodborne illnesses. In fact, what we sometimes mistake for the flu or an upset stomach may actually be mild food poisoning. Be sure to toss out any food that is past its expiration date, or if you are working on a healthier you, throw out foods that are high in calories, sugar or fat. Be sure to take everything out and disinfect your refrigerator’s surfaces and shelves at least once a month, if not weekly. Viruses and bacteria like salmonella and E. coli can thrive in warmth, so be sure to your refrigerator temperature remains below 40 degrees.

Outside

If you have stainless steel appliances, be sure to rub in the direction of the grain. Wipe the outside down with vinegar and use a soft cloth to wipe it off for a sleek shine! For other surface types, use a nonabrasive scrubber as to not leave scratches. Remember: don’t just focus on the doors and sides. Remove grime from the seams and rubber seals with warm water and soap or any mild household cleaning solution.

Cleaning up doesn’t always mean soap and water. Clean up the surface of your refrigerator by organizing that mess of papers and magnets with refrigerator clips from Lulalu. Book reports, permissions slips, calendars, to do lists — these colorful clips will make your mess a masterpiece. Choose your favorite color and keep all of your important papers within reach, or post your latest selfie for everyone to see!
